From January 14 to 16, Tec Labs took part in a workshop hosted by the 3BAtwin consortium at the Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The initiative brought together project managers from FCiências.ID and Ciências, as well as technology transfer professionals, to explore the journey from biomedical research to market-ready innovation.
The three-day training school focused heavily on the BioInnovate programme, inspired by the identify–invent–implement methodology. This approach is grounded in a need-led innovation model, where researchers, clinicians, technical experts, and business professionals immerse themselves in a hospital environment to understand real, everyday challenges. From this immersion, participants generate a wide range of ideas, progressively narrow them down through conceptualisation, and ultimately move forward with the solution that shows the highest viability for implementation.

In the context of technology transfer, discussions addressed some of the persistent barriers, particularly the limited engagement of the public sector and researchers in bringing technologies to market. The programme concluded with practical case studies of MedTech companies that successfully navigated the path from research to commercialisation, offering valuable, real-world insights.
The workshop also included a visit to Tec Labs. Looking ahead, the collaboration will continue with a follow-up visit to Galway, where we will further explore and learn from their incubator model.
