Tec Labs at IncubX: National Incubators and Accelerators Meeting in Madeira

On March 20th and 21st, the Tec Labs team escaped the rainy weather in Lisbon and headed to sunny Madeira to attend IncubX, the national gathering of incubators and accelerators organized by Startup Portugal. Held at Vila Galé Santa Cruz Hotel, the event combined insightful discussions with stunning ocean views, bringing together key players in the ecosystem for two days of keynote talks, debates, and roundtables.

The first day opened with an action plan from Startup Portugal, outlining the next steps for the National Network of Incubators (RNI). The discrepancy between predicted and recognized startups led to a discussion of the incubator’s role in promoting a recognition that brings tax benefits and advantages for startups. We also explored various programs and incentives supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, presented by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). This set the stage for a dynamic debate on the diversity of Portuguese incubators, where we delved into the different models—local vs. technology-driven—and examined how we can collaborate to grow and improve. One particularly interesting discussion questioned whether Portugal has too many incubators and whether we are competing for the same companies.

After an energy boost, we moved into roundtable discussions focused on regional activation strategies to drive collective impact. The day wrapped up with a networking dinner, where conversations and ideas flowed effortlessly.

Day two began early with an inspiring success story from eGames Lab, highlighting effective collaboration. This was followed by a compelling discussion on “Incubators and Universities: How to Strengthen the Relationship and Create New Startups for the Market.” The conversation reinforced the critical role of incubators in fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among students and researchers, and exploring programs that enhance technology transfer. Before we knew it, we were on a bus to Funchal, where we met Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism, and Culture, and José Sílvio Moreira Fernandes, Rector of the University of Madeira. We even had time for a brief exploration of Funchal’s charming streets before our final stop: a visit to the Artificial Intelligence Centre, where we were amazed by the research and innovation taking place.

As we reflect on our time at IncubX, we return to Tec Labs energized by new insights, stronger connections, and a renewed drive to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Events like these remind us of the power of collaboration in shaping the future of innovation. With Alentejo as our next destination, we are excited to continue learning, exchanging ideas, and strengthening the role of incubators in Portugal.
